Sunday Residencies: Martin Kemp's Work in Progress and Black Fen Folk Club

Martin Kemp's Work in Progress 3-5.30pm

Martin Kemp plays, teaches, composes and arranges jazz and classical music. He plays tenor sax, clarinet and bass clarinet. In the London scene in the 1960s he played alongside Humphrey Lyttelton, Sandy Brown, George Melly and Bruce Turner. Moving to Cambridge in the 1970s, he started teaching jazz to adults and in local schools, including the award-winning Mad Hatters jazz band. He is Course Director of the weekend jazz courses at Grafham Water.

Martin says: “I have always been interested in the enormous range of jazz styles, both complex and simple.   My original grounding was in swing, but recently I have become involved in playing jazz tangos, gipsy jazz, early Ellington (via the excellent Harmony in Harlem) and my 8-piece band Mingusology (due at Hot Numbers on the evening of 7 March).   These new influences and many others have contributed great enjoyment to free things up, renew the longstanding relationship between jazz and dance and prevent jazz from becoming formalistic. Above all, I am absolutely set on making jazz playing available to young players in schools, as my own experience has shown that they become very keen on an art form which can be enjoyed by players of varying skills”.

“Martin Kemp’s Work in Progress” is an extension of the previous tango/Latin project, and will reflect his own interest in these varying styles, as well as including guests players locally and from London.
