Jazz Night! Alex Hitchcock Quartet

The Thursday Night Jazz tradition was introduced to Hot Numbers Gwydir Street by Nick Hill, known to Cambridge locals from his previous residencies at the Elm Tree and the Cricketers. We now welcome Mark Hale, a frequent guest of Nick's and outstanding Drummer, to bring fresh talent from the UK Jazz scene every Thursday. Our live music is funded through the generosity of the audience with a suggested donation of £5. 

January 14th - Alex Hitchcock Quartet Feat. Michael De Souza - Guitar

Alex Hitchcock - Tenor Saxophone

Alex Hitchcock is a saxophonist and composer based in London. He leads his own trio (with Misha Mullov-Abbado and Dave Storey) and runs the regular Sunday night jam at the Green Note in Camden, as well as working as a sideman in various other bands. In 2014, he began working with the National Youth Jazz Collective on the Ambassadors jazz education training scheme, and in 2015 with Serious through the Young&Serious programme.

He studied English at Cambridge University where he was director of the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra, touring to Istanbul and collaborating with Laurence Cottle. In 2013, he started on a postgraduate course at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied with Iain Ballamy, Gareth Lockrane, and Julian Siegel.

Venues performed in include Ronnie Scott's, Pizza Express Jazz Club, The Vortex, The Bull's Head, Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Spice of Life, The 606 Club, Charlie Wright's International, Cambridge Modern Jazz Club, Budapest Jazz Club, Jazz Club de Tunis.

Simon Read - Bass

Simon Read is a Leeds based double and electric bass player. He has been interested in playing music since early childhood. Encouraged by his musical family, he started out at the age of seven on the violin and at the age twelve was bought an electric bass by his father and has been playing ever since. He got lessons from Tom Mason, the London based bassist and gradually through this time started playing the double bass as well.

Having studied at Leeds College of Music, Simon has been taught by Garry Jackson, Zoltan Dekany and Dave Kane respectively. Currently Simon is in many varying ensembles, including his own octet the ‘Simon Read Octet’ which he writes all the music for. He is also in the ‘Matt Anderson/Jiannis Pavlidis Quartet’, the ‘Eirik Svela Trio’ and ‘Katie Patterson’s Steely Dan Big Band’. He regularly performs all over the U.K. with these and many other ensembles.

Michael De Souza - Guitar

Michael De Souza is a versatile and in-demand electric guitarist, as well as a prominent figure amongst the current wave of improvisers and jazz musicians emerging from the London scene. Having attended both Leeds College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, Michael has learnt from the best Musicians in, and out of the country.

He also leads his own Quintet comprising of Sam Rapley, Matthew Herd, Ben Brown and Misha Mullov-Abbado, all of whom met whilst studying on the jazz programme at the Royal Academy of Music and are now individually making waves on the London Jazz scene as instrumentalists and band leaders.The music played by the Quintet is completely original and composed by Michael specifically for the band, infusing Jazz Harmonies, Rock Riffs, Brazilian Grooves and Free Improv Chaos!

As both a leader and a side-man, Michael has performed at some of the countries top Jazz venues, as well as London, Manchester and Herts Jazz festivals. Michael can regularly be heard performing in bars and clubs around London, playing anything from Funk to Bossa Nova.
