Afro Tema

From leafy Cambridge to the sandy streets of Dakar...

Afro Tema are a Cambridge based live band who play for gig loving, toe-tapping audiences who love to strut their stuff. They'll take you smoothly from salsa to funk, from rock to reggae, all blended with exuberant pan African melodies.

Afro Tema was born out of a shared love of the rhythms of West Africa and the desire to bring this amazing music to a broader audience. Their unique mix of original songs and diaspora classics always gets the crowd rushing to the dance floor, with an uplifting groove all of its own. The distinctive voice of the lead singer will immediately transport you to the streets of Senegal. This combines with cyclical African riffs and soaring rock sounds, the chattering high hats and crack of the djembe and funky rhythmic bass and keys, to bring you a thrilling exciting sound like no other.

Their songs are inspired by maternal wisdom, the rich heritage and history of Africa and the daily experience of the African diaspora in the UK. They perform an eclectic mix of Afro Funk and Rock, high life, reggae, Afro Latin and Mbalax from across the continent.

Whether you love live music, world music or a party atmosphere, you need to see them do what they do best. Makhou (vocals) , Clive (guitar) , Joseph (bass) and Lucas (drums) draw their energy and inspiration from playing their inclusive music to a dancing crowd of all ages and nationalities. And when you come to an Afro Tema gig, you will dance!
