What's On Calendar

Jazz Night! Sam Braysher

w/ The Wandering Yak serving 6-9pm.

The Thursday Night Jazz tradition was introduced to Hot Numbers Gwydir Street by Nick Hill, known to Cambridge locals from his previous residencies at the Elm Tree and the Cricketers. We now welcome Mark Hale, a frequent guest of Nick's and outstanding Drummer, to bring fresh talent from the UK Jazz scene every Thursday. Our live music is funded through the generosity of the audience with a suggested donation of £5.

Sam Braysher was born in London 1989, but grew up in Norfolk, taking up the alto saxophone at age 11. After playing lead alto in the Norwich Students' Jazz Orchestra he took up a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2007, where he studied jazz saxophone with Martin Hathaway, Jean Toussaint, classical saxophone with Christian Foreshaw, and flute and clarinet with Nick Moss.

Whilst at the Guildhall School Sam performed with Jacqui Dankworth, Stan Sulzmann, & Bobby Wellins, to name a few and participated in masterclasses with John Scofield, Christian McBride & Mark Turner.

Sam Graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2011 before becoming a GSMD Artist Fellow. He now leads a busy freelance career, leading a quartet of top London jazz musicians, an early edition of which won the UK Jazz Radio Young Performers' Award in 2010, and playing with a variety of ensembles in a venues including Ronnie Scott's, The Vortex, The 606, Pizza Express Jazz Club and Royal Festival Hall. He will play a selection of carefully-presented, often lesser-known numbers from the American Songbook and jazz canon, with nods to favourite composers/musicians including Irving Berlin, Frank Sinatra, Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker.
