Grifter Kid and the Midnight Raiders is the creative mind child of comedy actor Karl Theobald (Green Wing, TwentyTwelve, Plebs).
Though the songs display a playful, wry and sometimes dark humour, they have no intention of being ‘comedic’.
‘Please Girl’ is a consummate and intriguingly distinctive collection of laid back, louche sounds... It’s real romance but with an unexpected knife edge in tow. Quirky lounge cut with a swinging, warm jazzy vibe.
'Influenced by acoustic folk, Theobald decided to learn 3 chords on a guitar. Woolston was already having Saxaphone lessons - inflenced by Bowie. They met in a local Cafe and decided it would take 2 yrs to learn 4 chords and some songs thereby finding a means to busk their way through Europe. After a only a week on the continent they were kicked out of Paris by a Jean-Paul Sartre Look-a-like for not paying their bill.
Years later, back in England, Theobald, guided by the spirit of mixed iconic songwriters decided to pen his own songs in an attempt to unpick and discover the elusive heart of song... Playful, dreamy and still learning....'
As likely to turn up and play a clean- stripped back acoustic set as they are to arrive fully loaded with amps and guests, Grifter Kid and the Midnight Raiders are Karl Theobald (Lead vocal, Guitar), Nigel Woolston (Saxophone, Clarinet, vocal), Rowan Lambourne – Gibbs (Lead vocal, Double Bass), Migdalia van der Hoven (drums) Russell Marsh (Piano)
The style ranges from western swing, louche lounge, jazz noir to country and folk, but always with a poetic sensibility.
