The Thursday Night Jazz tradition was introduced to Hot Numbers Gwydir Street by Nick Hill, known to Cambridge locals from his previous residencies at the Elm Tree and the Cricketers. We now welcome Mark Hale, a frequent guest of Nick's and outstanding Drummer, to bring fresh talent from the UK Jazz scene every Thursday. Our live music is funded through the generosity of the audience with a suggested donation of £5.
Sounding equally impressive playing within the jazz standards tradition and also presenting his own original compositions, Saxophonist and Composer Josh Kemp has completed major UK tours in 2014 and in 2015, gaining many plaudits along the way for his fluid improvising style and attractive compositions.
With a playing style combining melodic inventiveness, a rich tone and a lyrical style of improvisation, Josh is a regular performer at Jazz Clubs and Festivals across the UK, with recent performances including Ronnie Scott's and the London Jazz Festival.
Current projects include the Josh Kemp Hammond Organ Band (‘Rare Groove’ CD 2015) – with Steve Fishwick on Trumpet, Ross Stanley/Mike Gorman on Hammond Organ and Chris Higginbottom on Drums. The Jazz Prophets (‘Tone Poetry’ CD 2014) – with Tim Lapthorn on Piano, Mick Hutton on Double Bass and Matt Skelton on Drums. The Josh Kemp Standards Quartet features Robin Aspland on Piano, Simon Thorpe on Double Bass and Paul Caviaciuti on Drums. Other projects include composing for and playing with the E17 Large Ensemble, and a variety of other projects including house musician for London's Savoy and Dorchester Hotels.
