At Hot Numbers Gwydir Street
As a brief introduction to Japanese water-based woodblock printing, Ralph Kiggell will give a short talk and demonstration of the various materials used in this time-honoured printing method, originating in China over 2,000 years ago.
Japanese woodblock printing is an entirely machine-free printing method, using handmade paper, knives and brushes. In Japan, this printing process evolved into a highly sophisticated multi-colour technique that enabled craftsmen to depict a range of subjects appealing to the popular market, while in the last 20 years or so, it is celebrated for its sensitive results, nontoxic materials and hands-on process.
