Recorded in 1959 and released on Atlantic in 1960, Blues and Roots is one of Charles Mingus' most celebrated albums which we invite you to enjoy in vinyl high fidelity in it's entiriety at Hot Numbers for our first Hot Numbers Long Player evening
Of Blues and Roots Mingus famously said `Some people, particularly critics, were saying I didn't swing enough.' Blues and Roots (his response) is a thirty eight minute barrage of exhilariating soul music and churchy blues.
After listening to the whole album we will be joined by musical director of Mingusology Martin Kemp who will speak about the album, it's influence on him and others and demonstrate some of the motifs.
