Josh Kemp & Alex Hutton `Lush Life’ Works of Billy Strayhorn

Combining the rich sonorities of the bass clarinet and piano, this duo will explore the compositions of Billy Strayhorn (Duke Ellington’s composer) and also present original material inspired by his works.

Duke Ellington described Strayhorn as ‘my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brain waves in his head, and his in mine’. His work draws on a rich harmonic palette to create expressive compositions steeped in the blues.

Alex Hutton – Piano

Jazz pianist Alex Hutton is a fine composer with an ear for folk and classical influences. He is a gifted and thoughtful improviser; a mainstay of the London jazz scene who has worked with Jim Mullen, Pete King to Pete Wareham.

Wonderfully rich toned … a Nuanced and Original Sound Time OutCombining an extensive familiarity with the jazz tradition with a contemporary perspective, Josh is known for his thoughtful improvising style and attractive compositions, delivered in a style emphasising lyrical and melodic  flow. As bandleader and composer Josh Kemp has completed 4 major UK tours since 2014, releasing 5 CDs of original compositions. He has been active on the London Scene for twenty years since winning a Ronnie Scott prize to Study at the Guildhall.
