Tango and More with Martin Kemp

Martin writes..

Some years ago I found the wonderful tango music of Astor Piazzolla.

As a boy he played tangos in the waterfront cafes of Buenos Aires. After studying composition with world class teachers in Paris, Piazzolla created a new style of Tango, the lyrical Tango Nuevo (New Tango), more like a Bossa Nova and writing a flood of beautiful tangos as well as classical pieces, working with such world class musicians as Gerry Mulligan, Daniel Barenboim and Yo Yo Ma.  However, some  traditionalists in his homeland were not happy and he had to move to Italy for a time. He died in the 70s.

Tango and More is a group of Cambridge musicians formed to play Piazzolla’s wonderful music. The full ensemble,10 strong, includes flute, clarinet, violin, trombone, accordion and rhythm, and has played at the Edinburgh Fringe as well as  Newnham College, Hughes Hall, St Ives Jazz Festival , the Geldart and Baroosh Bar and Hot Numbers.

For this special gig at Hot Numbers we are a scaled down ensemble This gives Tango and More  a chance to display a more flexible, jazz-oriented style, extending to other related areas, including the music of of Gerry Mulligan, Jobim, Charlie Haden, and Chick Corea.

As a special treat, we will be joined on 23 July by Charlie Mattar a formidable baritone who sings opera at Covent Garden, and is also well known locally for his exciting performances of Cole Porter, Gershwin Shakespeare songs and spirituals with Dog Days at Hot Numbers and other Cambridge venues.

The music is exciting and very danceable, well in the tradition of my quartet  ‘Organised Chaos’ which performs on Sundays to a mixed and enthusiastic audience, often including children who dance with great enthusiasm!
