If you’ve ever hit the UK motorway network, you’ll know the familiar dread: the desperate craving for a decent caffeine fix met only by the grim reality of chain-dominated service stations, lacklustre blends, and lukewarm cups of commodity-grade disappointment.
That’s why we were thrilled to see our Shepreth roastery recently featured in The Telegraph, where writer Rob Crossan set out on a mission to uncover the absolute best independent coffee stops for motorists in the UK.
In his article, "The best independent cafés for good-quality coffee near the motorway", Crossan awarded Hot Numbers his personal top spot for drivers looking to escape the motorway monotony, celebrating what happens when you swap out corporate convenience for a proper, out-of-control obsession with coffee, engineering, and music.
Escaping the Motorway Routine
Located just seven miles from the M11 at Duxford (and nestled near Shepreth, south-west of Cambridge), our roastery was built out of a frustration shared by road-weary drivers everywhere:
“You pull off the motorway and that’s the only place there is, so you have what’s there. There is no alternative, and that’s always been my frustration.”
— Simon Fraser, Founder
We set out to change that narrative. Housed in a former lawnmower warehouse with steel beams, scuffed concrete floors, hessian coffee sacks, and a vintage Raleigh motorcycle perched above the counter, our Shepreth space offers a genuine refuge where drivers can step away from the tarmac and into something real.
Small Batch, Specialty Arabica: Quality Without Compromise
Why is motorway coffee so notoriously grim? As Simon pointed out to The Telegraph, the giants of the industry lean heavily on robusta—a low-cost, high-caffeine commodity bean dominated by bitterness.
At Hot Numbers, we do things differently. Rooted in our core commitment to quality without compromise, we focus exclusively on ethically sourced, high-altitude arabica beans that bring out complex, rich, and naturally sweeter flavour profiles. Roasted with care in small batches right here at our Shepreth roastery, every single origin and house blend tells a distinct story.
Whether you're pulling in for a meticulously dialed-in espresso, a silky flat white, or grabbing a fresh sourdough loaf from our bakery for the road, every single detail matters.
Come and See Us
